Be Skin Positive With Acne

Be Skin Positive With Acne

4 minute read

Almost every day a patient cries in my office about their acne," says Cybele Fishman, MD, and a renowned dermatologist in New York City.

The stigma around acne and acne marks has led too many people to live a life of insecurities and affected more than just one aspect of their lives. This day reminds us what our role in the life of these people could be and how would that change it for them. We should start by discouraging the use of terminology like ‘scars’ to describe marks acne leaves behind, normalize textured skin, pimples, redness, and other issues acne causes.

According to an estimate, 80% of people from 11 years olds to 30 years old adult will experience a mild form of acne at some point in their life. This is the most common skin condition to exist but yet, here we are trying to normalize it. Please know that you do not go and tell somebody with acne to drink more water, add/subtract certain foods to their diet, that they must not be exercising enough, or, the worse thing I’ve ever heard “wash your face more often".

You may be trying to be sympathetic but know that people with acne can be ultra-sensitive regarding their acne and such remarks can give rise to a ton of insecurities in them. Having acne is tough but unsolicited advice like this can make it even more distressing, ultimately leading to depression and anxiety. Today we acknowledge that adult acne can be painful to deal with physically and mentally and those suffering from it are more than likely to feel abandoned, dejected, and deeply hurt. We must recognize their pain and stand with them because there’s scientific evidence showing signs of mental illnesses like severe depression, anxiety, poor self-esteem linked with acne.

What that means is that people are literally holding themselves from reaching their full potential and living their life because this condition is thought to be so abnormal and unnatural or odd and people not suffering from it are quick to judge and even point it out in worst-case scenarios. We must support people make their choices about it and stop making it about peer pressure or other’s opinion of them.
